What Is Scaling And Root Planing?

Scaling is a non-surgical procedure in which the plaque and calculus are removed from the tooth surface and then smoothed to prevent further attachment of microorganisms. Plaque is a soft, yellowish-grayish substance that sticks to the surfaces of both natural and artificially restored teeth. It is a well-organized biofilm made mostly of bacteria embedded in a matrix of extracellular polysaccharides and glycosaminoglycans. However, when this plaque absorbs mineral content like calcium and phosphorus from the saliva, it becomes hard and forms calculus, commonly known as tartar. Plaque and tartar on teeth tarnish your smile and cause tooth decay. Plaque and tartar accumulation on teeth can be eliminated via teeth scaling. The contrast between the teeth scaling before and after will surprise you. Your teeth will seem whiter, which might help you smile with assurance. Scaling the teeth might help keep them from deteriorating.

Does Scaling Weaken My Teeth? There is a misconception regarding teeth scaling that has to do with tooth deterioration and movement in the teeth. It is untrue since following a tooth-scaling procedure, your teeth do not become fragile. Movement in the teeth may occur, but it is not due to scaling but rather to the removal of plaque and tartar that has been present for a long time. A sensitivity toothpaste can be used to manage sensitivity issues that some patients may develop after therapy. You will feel normal in 24 to 48 hours.

Benefits Of Scaling And Root Planing -Prevent tooth decay: Teeth scaling will help you avoid cavities and tooth decay, which are the origin of all major dental problems. The hardest component of your teeth, the enamel coating, is damaged by the cavities, which serve as a breeding ground for plaque. So, just think of the potential harm it may cause. -Prevent periodontal diseases: Plaque, which causes a variety of issues, will damage your gums if it has grown below the gumline. This may also result in tooth loss. Cleaning or scaling your teeth will protect your gum line and keep up overall good dental hygiene. -Remove stains: Stains appear on the teeth after drinking tea, coffee, colored beverages, wine, or tobacco. It enables you to keep your smile bright and remove all of these stains off your teeth while also somewhat lightening them. -Get rid of bad breath: Plaque, which is the root of many dental problems, traps germs and hardens into tartar on the teeth, which causes halitosis, or bad breath. You will observe some effects from regular brushing and flossing, but scaling is required to eradicate foul breath. Your mouth will feel cleaner when all bacteria, stains, tartar, and plaque have been removed. -Protect overall health: Over the years, gum illnesses have been connected to a variety of problems, including heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Because the bacteria that cause periodontitis can penetrate the bloodstream and spread there, it can affect your heart and brain as well as other body organs. The dentist's expert cleaning can stop this from happening.

How Is Scaling And Root Planing Done? Scaling and root planing of the teeth can be performed as an outpatient procedure in your dentist's office. According to the seriousness of your problem, you might need to make one or more visits for treatment. The use of a local anesthetic by your dentist to ease the pain of the procedure may or may not be necessary. First, your dentist will clean your teeth. This includes removing plaque from your teeth as well as from any significant pockets that have formed around your teeth and gums. Your dentist will then do the root debridement. Using a scaling instrument, your dentist will clean the tooth roots. This will help in the redevelopment of gums around the root. Depending on how well your teeth and gums are growing, your dentist may potentially suggest additional therapy. To speed up your healing, your dentist could place antimicrobials in your mouth or give you antibiotics to take orally for a few days.

Is Scaling And Root Planing Painful? It depends upon the level of extent of scaling and the patient's threshold level of pain. However, in short, to answer the question, the procedure is not painful. Sometimes the patient has severe gingivitis, which may cause extra bleeding and discomfort. To overcome the pain and discomfort, your dentist may apply local anesthetic solutions on your gums. After the treatment, you may feel discomfort because your teeth become sensitive. For that reason, your dentist advises medications to relieve the sensitivity.

How Often Do You Need Scaling And Root Planing? One scaling and root planing procedure may be sufficient for some individuals to treat gum disease and stop it from returning, particularly if the patient makes an effort to maintain excellent oral hygiene practices like brushing and flossing. However, for some individuals, the treatment might not be enough to stop the infections from harming the bone and tissue that support their teeth. The infection will spread if the remaining problems are not addressed with additional therapy, possibly resulting in tooth shifting or even tooth loss. Antibiotics and more comprehensive treatments, such as possible minor surgery, may be part of additional therapy.

An aggressive gum infection can be treated by scaling and root planing. It differs from your routine cleaning. To maintain the health of the gums and teeth, general cleaning is used. Scaling and root planing are used to treat gum infections that are active and stop the progression of the disease. A scaling and root planing treatment is deemed successful if the patient can keep their gingival health moving forward without experiencing additional bone or attachment loss and if it stops recurrent infections.

They're All Top Notch
Julie C.

I'm so happy to have found this awesome dentist with an awesome staff. I am completely confident in the doctor's skill level, and completely comfortable relying on him to work on me without allowing me to experience unnecessary pain. In addition to having a good relationship with the dentist, being able to relate with the office staff is equally important to me. From the hygienist to the dental assistants to the front desk, they're all top notch.

This is the best dentist I have been to and I have been to several. The team is professional and welcoming. They are never over-booked and I have never waited more than 5 minutes in the lobby. They are so efficient, no matter what I go in for, I am out in 45 minutes or less. I highly recommend Cypress Family Dental.

The Staff Did A Great Job
David L.

Came to Cypress Family Dental a year ago for my sleep apnea device. No more snoring! The staff did a great job fitting me for this oral appliance. Better yet, they were there to support me when I needed some adjustments later on. The front office staff couldn't have been more accommodating to schedule me in. Easy to recommend.

They Truly Care
Tina E.

The dentist and his staff are wonderful people! In the past, I have had horrible experiences at other dentist offices and then I found this place and I don't think I would ever go anywhere else again. I live about 45 min away from their office but the drive is well worth it. They truly care about their patients. I would recommend this office to anyone.

The sweetest people work here, I'm convinced! The ladies at the front desk always go out of their way to be kind and helpful, the hygienists listen to your concerns and will address them to their best ability, and the doctors are just stellar.
