We Can Replace Your Silver Fillings

You can have your silver fillings replaced with tooth-colored restorations...

If you have a silver filling that you’d like replaced, we can accommodate that. This process requires two appointments. At your first appointment, the old filling is removed along with any additional decay. An impression is made of your tooth, and a model is made and sent to the lab while a temporary onlay is placed on the tooth. At the lab, a porcelain restoration is carefully made to fit your tooth precisely and look natural. At your second appointment, the temporary onlay is removed. A conditioning gel is placed on your tooth to prepare it for the new onlay. Bonding cement is placed on the tooth, and a high-intensity light bonds the porcelain to the tooth, which is then polished. Your teeth are restored to a natural look and feel, they are stronger, and the tooth is protected!

Cavity Fillings Cypress, California

There Are Different Fillings

Your tooth restoration in Cypress can be done in a few ways...

At Cypress Family Dental, we rarely use silver or mercury fillings in our practice anymore. However, many people still have silver or mercury fillings in their mouths from years past. These fillings are not particularly pleasing to the eye, and we know that by unavoidable design, silver or mercury fillings ultimately result in a weaker tooth structure. Porcelain inlays and tooth-colored onlays create fillings that are not only beautiful and unnoticeable but also add strength to weakened teeth. These restorations are esthetically pleasing and very strong, thanks to new bonding technologies.

Tooth Decay Stages

Early detection ensures that we can give you fast-acting treatment...

Teeth with discoloration
White Spots

Plaque and bacteria begin to accumulate on your teeth when you have poor oral hygiene habits. Chalky white spots form as the minerals keeping your teeth strong are lost. It is possible to reverse this demineralization, however, with proper brushing and flossing techniques as well as topical treatments such as fluoride toothpaste.

Enamel Decay

The enamel of your tooth begins to deteriorate without minerals to keep it strong. It is no longer possible to remineralize, and a lesion will form inside of the tooth. Treatment of the lesion quickly can prevent a cavity from forming and requiring a dental filling.

Teeth with moderate discoloration
Teeth with significant discoloration
Dentin Decay

When the decay penetrates the enamel and reaches the dentin layer, it creates a cavity, or pit, in the tooth. Either a dental crown or a filling must be used to treat the cavity at this stage. Dentin is softer than enamel, and the infection will penetrate this layer quickly and progress to the next stage. It is critical to detect and treat tooth infections quickly.

Pulp Involvement

Once the decay breaks through the tooth's dentin layer, it begins to attack the inner dental pulp. Dental pulp contains the blood vessels and nerves keeping your tooth alive, and damaging it can be extremely painful. The infection will continue to work its way to the root of the tooth, and a root canal will be needed to fully remove this damaged tissue.

Abscess Formation

After the decay reaches the end of the tooth, it begins to infect the surrounding gum and form a pus-filled pocket called a tooth abscess. Abscesses attack the nearby soft tissue and bone even as the bacteria in the tooth continues to destroy the rest of the dental pulp.

Silver Fillings Vs Tooth-Colored Restorations

Learn why we provide tooth-colored restorations...

While they were once the industry standard, silver fillings have many drawbacks. The edges of the silver filling can wear down, become weak, or break. This results in the patient’s tooth not being protected and lets cavities get started once again. With age, the metal of a silver filling expands and contracts, causing cracks to develop in the afflicted tooth. Not only that, but silver fillings contain over 50 percent mercury. They can corrode, leak, and cause stains on your teeth and gums.

We at Cypress Family Dental do not regularly offer silver fillings, we offer porcelain inlays and tooth-colored onlays instead. There are many advantages to tooth-colored restorations over silver fillings. Our resin onlays are bonded to the teeth creating a tight, superior fit to the natural tooth. Such restorations can be used in instances where much of the tooth structure has been lost. The tooth remains intact and stronger. Since the resin used in tooth-colored restorations contains fluoride, this can help prevent decay. The resin wears like natural teeth and does not require placement at the gum line, which is healthier for your gums! The result is a beautiful smile.

Cavities & Fillings FAQ Cypress, California

Frequently Asked Questions

It can be hard to identify a cavity with the naked eye, but some symptoms include discoloration of the tooth, swollen or puffy gums, and maybe even a small visible hole.

A cavity is a small hole in a tooth that is caused by decay.

Our tooth-colored restoration’s cost varies depending on which tooth, how many, and the level of decay.

Some symptoms of tooth decay include tooth sensitivity, toothache, sensitivity to heat and cold, and swollen or puffy gums.

Generally speaking, filling a cavity shouldn’t hurt. This is also contingent on the type of cavity you have. Smaller cavities are closer to the surface and are quicker to fill, while deeper cavities may take longer and cause more discomfort.

Not all cavities need to be filled. If the dentist catches it in the early stages, simple fluoride treatment could be effective. If the cavity is on a child’s baby tooth, the dentist may just wait for the situation to resolve itself naturally.

The Doctors Are Just Stellar
Natalie R.

The sweetest people work here, I'm convinced! The ladies at the front desk always go out of their way to be kind and helpful, the hygienists listen to your concerns and will address them to their best ability, and the doctors are just stellar. I drive over 40 min from where I live to go here because it's rare to find a dental office this fantastic.

They Truly Care
Tina E.

The dentist and his staff are wonderful people! In the past, I have had horrible experiences at other dentist offices and then I found this place and I don't think I would ever go anywhere else again. I live about 45 min away from their office but the drive is well worth it. They truly care about their patients. I would recommend this office to anyone.

The Staff Did A Great Job
David L.

Came to Cypress Family Dental a year ago for my sleep apnea device. No more snoring! The staff did a great job fitting me for this oral appliance. Better yet, they were there to support me when I needed some adjustments later on. The front office staff couldn't have been more accommodating to schedule me in. Easy to recommend.

I'm so happy to have found this awesome dentist with an awesome staff. I am completely confident in the doctor's skill level, and completely comfortable relying on him to work on me without allowing me to experience unnecessary pain. In addition to having a good relationship with the dentist, being able to relate with the office staff is equally important to me. From the hygienist to the dental assistants to the front desk, they're all top notch.
