Your Child’s First Visit

A “Happy Visit” should take place around the age of 3...

The first visit, which is typically short, is designed mainly to make your child feel safe and comfortable with our office, doctors, and staff. You may be asked to sit in the dental chair and hold your child during part of the visit. We may also suggest that you wait in the reception area for part of the visit so that a trusting relationship can develop between your child and the dentist.

During this appointment, one of our kid friendly dentists will examine your child’s teeth and gums. X-rays may be taken to look for any decay and to see how the permanent teeth are positioned under the gums. Our hygienist may clean your child’s teeth and apply a topical fluoride. You can expect us to go over some brushing and flossing techniques with you so you can keep your child’s teeth and gums healthy.

Many parents ask us what they should tell their children about their first visit to the dentist. The best approach to take is to speak positively about your child’s first dental visit in Cypress. Tell your child the dentist is their friend who will be helping keep their teeth beautiful and healthy. You may be surprised to find out that your child has a positive reaction to this important dental visit! If it’s time for your child’s first dental visit, please schedule an appointment with us.

We love providing dental care to children and truly enjoy meeting our youngest patients for the first time! We have the best dentists for kids and will make sure your child feels safe and secure. If you have any questions about how to care for your child’s teeth, please contact us, as we’re always happy to speak with you. We look forward to seeing you and your child soon and welcoming you to our family dentistry practice in Cypress, where we give our patients many good reasons to smile!

We Focus On Preventative Dental Care

Even though tooth decay is very prevalent in children, there are many ways to prevent your child from getting tooth decay...

We offer dental sealants that are designed to protect the teeth from decay. These sealants are fast and easy to apply to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. Dental sealants help ward off decay by sealing the tiny cracks and crevices on the tooth surfaces where harmful bacteria can hide. This is just one of the ways we can help set a strong foundation of preventative dental care in Cypress so your child can enjoy a lifetime of healthy smiles! When it comes to causing cavities, the main culprits are sugary foods and inefficient brushing. Limiting the number of sugary foods your child eats and making sure he or she is brushing well can help prevent cavities. Every time we eat something, a chemical reaction occurs in the mouth that lasts for about 20 minutes. This acidic environment can slowly destroy the structure of teeth which can lead to the development of cavities.

The Importance Of Primary Teeth

Primary teeth are important, even though they’re temporary...

Despite the temporary nature of a child’s primary teeth, they are still critically important in the development of good oral health. Just because primary teeth fall out doesn’t mean they won’t impact the child, whether it be physically or in terms of self esteem. The first primary teeth to come in are the two bottom front teeth between the ages of 6 and 8 months. After those teeth come in, four upper teeth emerge through the gums. The rest of your baby’s teeth will typically appear in pairs along the sides of the jaw until about two and a half years of age, at which time your child should have all their primary teeth. Then between the ages of 5 and 6, the first permanent teeth will start to erupt. Some of these permanent teeth will replace primary teeth, while others just fill open gaps in the mouth. Because many pave the way for eventual permanent teeth, your child’s primary teeth are very important. These first teeth hold space for the permanent teeth, so if they are misaligned, it can create an impediment for the permanent teeth’s arrival. In certain cases, primary teeth may be pulled to make room for the eventual permanent teeth. In addition to this, primary teeth help your child chew and speak in early adolescence, so issues with primary teeth can pose serious medical issues. Primary teeth are also important for appearance and good self-esteem in children. For these reasons, it is very important to provide your child with a nutritious diet full of healthy foods and see to it that they practice good oral hygiene to keep these teeth healthy. At Cypress Family Dental, we will provide your child with the information and resources they need to keep their teeth healthy, and also provide cleanings and exams to see if more steps need to be taken.

Frequently Asked Questions

According to the American Association of Pediatric Dentists, it's recommended that kids go in for their first oral health checkup when their baby teeth first begin to emerge or by the time their first birthday comes around.

During the examination, the dentist will check all of your child's teeth for decay, examine their bite, and look for any potential problems with the gums, jaw, and tissues. If indicated, the dentist will clean the teeth and assess the need for fluoride.

Pediatric dentists can provide special attention to your child's sensitive teeth. They have specialized knowledge of children's teeth and jaw development. They can also help children break bad habits like thumb sucking or prolonged pacifier use. They also could be needed as children’s emergency dentists.

General dentists tend to treat and focus solely on adult teeth and adult dental health conditions, meanwhile children’s pediatric dentists usually only treat children's teeth (also known as baby teeth), mixed dentition (kids with some baby teeth and some adult teeth), and sometimes adults with special needs.

Set a positive mood for their upcoming dental appointment. Do not let your child recognize any anxiety you may experience associated with the appointment. Help your child relax with breathing techniques and provide them with reassurance to help take their mind off their fear.

Typically, your child's pediatric dentist will continue to provide dental care for as long as you feel it is necessary. Children sometimes switch to a regular dentist when they turn 18. It all depends on your child's particular situation and overall dental health.

The Doctors Are Just Stellar
Natalie R.

The sweetest people work here, I'm convinced! The ladies at the front desk always go out of their way to be kind and helpful, the hygienists listen to your concerns and will address them to their best ability, and the doctors are just stellar. I drive over 40 min from where I live to go here because it's rare to find a dental office this fantastic.

Gordon A.

This is the best dentist I have been to and I have been to several. The team is professional and welcoming. They are never over-booked and I have never waited more than 5 minutes in the lobby. They are so efficient, no matter what I go in for, I am out in 45 minutes or less. I highly recommend Cypress Family Dental.

They Truly Care
Tina E.

The dentist and his staff are wonderful people! In the past, I have had horrible experiences at other dentist offices and then I found this place and I don't think I would ever go anywhere else again. I live about 45 min away from their office but the drive is well worth it. They truly care about their patients. I would recommend this office to anyone.

The Staff Did A Great Job
David L.

Came to Cypress Family Dental a year ago for my sleep apnea device. No more snoring! The staff did a great job fitting me for this oral appliance. Better yet, they were there to support me when I needed some adjustments later on. The front office staff couldn't have been more accommodating to schedule me in. Easy to recommend.

They're All Top Notch
Julie C.

I'm so happy to have found this awesome dentist with an awesome staff. I am completely confident in the doctor's skill level, and completely comfortable relying on him to work on me without allowing me to experience unnecessary pain. In addition to having a good relationship with the dentist, being able to relate with the office staff is equally important to me. From the hygienist to the dental assistants to the front desk, they're all top notch.
