The first visit, which is typically short, is designed mainly to make your child feel safe and comfortable with our office, doctors, and staff. You may be asked to sit in the dental chair and hold your child during part of the visit. We may also suggest that you wait in the reception area for part of the visit so that a trusting relationship can develop between your child and the dentist.

During this appointment, one of our kid friendly dentists will examine your child’s teeth and gums. X-rays may be taken to look for any decay and to see how the permanent teeth are positioned under the gums. Our hygienist may clean your child’s teeth and apply a topical fluoride. You can expect us to go over some brushing and flossing techniques with you so you can keep your child’s teeth and gums healthy.

Despite the temporary nature of a child’s primary teeth, they are still critically important in the development of good oral health. Just because primary teeth fall out doesn’t mean they won’t impact the child, whether it be physically or in terms of self esteem. The first primary teeth to come in are the two bottom front teeth between the ages of 6 and 8 months. After those teeth come in, four upper teeth emerge through the gums. The rest of your baby’s teeth will typically appear in pairs along the sides of the jaw until about two and a half years of age, at which time your child should have all their primary teeth. Then between the ages of 5 and 6, the first permanent teeth will start to erupt. Some of these permanent teeth will replace primary teeth, while others just fill open gaps in the mouth. Because many pave the way for eventual permanent teeth, your child’s primary teeth are very important. These first teeth hold space for the permanent teeth, so if they are misaligned, it can create an impediment for the permanent teeth’s arrival. In certain cases, primary teeth may be pulled to make room for the eventual permanent teeth. In addition to this, primary teeth help your child chew and speak in early adolescence, so issues with primary teeth can pose serious medical issues. Primary teeth are also important for appearance and good self-esteem in children. For these reasons, it is very important to provide your child with a nutritious diet full of healthy foods and see to it that they practice good oral hygiene to keep these teeth healthy.
