In the event of a dental emergency, our doctors may determine that you need a tooth extracted for any number of reasons. Some teeth are extracted because they are severely decayed, while others may have advanced periodontal disease, or have broken in a way that cannot be repaired. Other teeth may need removal because they are poorly positioned in the mouth (such as impacted teeth) or in preparation for orthodontic treatment. The removal of a single tooth can lead to problems related to your chewing ability, jaw joint, and shifting teeth, which can have a major impact on your dental health. If our doctors determine that emergency tooth extraction is the best path for your dental situation, the process will begin with a shot of anesthetic to numb the tooth, gums, and bone tissue around the afflicted tooth. The anesthetic prevents you from feeling pain during your procedure, but if you do encounter pain, don’t hesitate to tell your dentist. Our goal is to make the process as comfortable as possible. After the anesthetic is applied, the dentist will enlarge the socket the tooth sits in to make removing it easier. After enough space is created, the doctor will separate the tooth from the ligament and remove it from your mouth. Once the tooth is removed, the doctor will clean the opening for any possible infection and close it back to size.
We know you can’t plan for a dental emergency, which is why our emergency dentist takes calls 24/7. No matter when or where your emergency occurs, we’re here to give you advice or schedule an appointment.
