Periodontal Maintenance

Let us help you protect yourself from gum disease...

If you notice any periodontal gum disease symptoms, don’t hesitate to contact our team of trained professionals here at Cypress Family Dental. Periodontal diseases are infections of the gums, which, in addition to being painful, can gradually destroy the support of your natural teeth. Gingivitis is considered a mild form of periodontal disease, but can still be a very painful and unpleasant experience. In a patient with gingivitis, the gums become red and inflamed. The gums may also be painfully swollen and recede, and bleeding is very common. While the treatments for periodontal disease may vary, the general causes stay the same. Dental plaque is the primary cause of gum disease in most afflicted individuals. Plaque is colorless, so it can be hard to identify the buildup before the individual begins experiencing gum pain or other signs of gum disease. When plaque hardens on a tooth, it becomes known as tartar. Tartar is impossible for individuals to remove by themselves, so contact Cypress Family Dental if you encounter any. Our trained professionals will clean and remove the tartar for you, hopefully stopping the gum disease in its early stages and formulating a gum disease treatment plan for you. The best way to prevent gum disease is with a proper tooth brushing and flossing technique.

Gingivitis Can Be Prevented and Treated

We are skilled in the prevention and treatment of gingivitis in Cypress...

Periodontal disease is a serious infection under your gum line. ARESTIN (minocycline hydrochloride) is an antibiotic that kills the bacteria that cause the infection. It’s placed directly in the infected areas or pockets in your gums right after scaling and root planing, the dental procedure that disrupts stubborn plaque and bacteria below your gum line where brushing and flossing can’t reach. ARESTIN starts working quickly, right at the source of infection and keeps fighting bacteria long after you leave the dental office. ARESTIN fights infection and inflammation for 30 days, and provides significantly better results than scaling and root planning alone for up to 90 days.

Periodontal Disease Stages

Gingivitis

First-stage gingivitis first appears after a few days of missed brushing and flossing as plaque and tartar accumulate below the gums. Oral bacteria irritates and inflames the soft tissues, turning them red, swollen, and tender. The damage to your gums isn’t permanent, and it can be fully reversed with consistent dental hygiene habits and a dental cleaning.

Mild Periodontitis

Once periodontitis develops, the gums begin receding and pulling away from the teeth, creating pockets that can trap more plaque and tartar. Periodontitis can also begin attacking the jawbone and connective tissues that work with your gums to anchor your teeth in place. We will recommend a deep cleaning to fully remove the buildup and help the gums heal.

Moderate Periodontitis

As your periodontal disease worsens, the gums further recede and the gum pockets deepen. More gum, bone, and soft tissues are destroyed, and the teeth start to loosen and move out of alignment. Oral bacteria can enter the bloodstream, giving them access to the rest of your body and general health.

Advanced Periodontitis

In the final stage, between 50 and 90% of the periodontal tissues can have been destroyed. As more of your teeth’s foundation is lost, they may become loose enough to fall out. Emergency gum surgery is needed to remove the infection and replace the missing tissues. Left untreated, our dentists may need to extract as even aggressive treatment can’t save them.

It can be extremely challenging to identify gum disease in its early stages. Plaque and tartar are colorless, and the early symptoms of disease are mild. Because of these factors, an estimated 7 out of every 10 Americans are suffering from gum disease, many without any knowledge of the situation at all. It shouldn’t be your responsibility alone to manage and identify gum disease, so let our team of professionals at Cypress Family Dental help. We will clean the plaque and tartar off of your teeth, while also diagnosing an issue if one presents itself.

Periodontitis Cypress, California

Severity Of Gingivitis

Why is oral hygiene in Cypress so important?

Bacteria found in plaque produce toxins or poisons that irritate the gums, which may cause them to turn red, swell, and bleed easily. If this irritation is prolonged, the gums separate from the teeth, causing pockets to form. As periodontal diseases progress, the supporting gum tissue and bone that hold teeth in place deteriorate. If left untreated, this leads to tooth loss. Periodontal diseases can be accelerated by a number of different factors related to the afflicted individual’s lifestyle. However, the disease is mainly caused by the bacteria found in dental plaque, a colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth. If not carefully removed by daily brushing and flossing, plaque hardens into a rough, porous substance known as calculus or tartar.

Daily brushing and flossing will keep dental calculus to a minimum, but a professional cleaning will remove calculus in places your toothbrush and floss have missed. The best way to prevent gum disease is effective daily brushing and flossing as well as regular professional examinations and cleanings. Unfortunately, even with the most diligent home dental care, people still can develop some form of periodontal disease. Once this disease starts, professional intervention is necessary to prevent its progress. Please call us at Cypress Family Dental if you believe you may be suffering from a form of gum disease.

Gum Disease FAQ Cypress, California

Frequently Asked Questions

Gum disease is a form of progressive infection that causes inflammation, recession, and can even decay your teeth or jawbone.

The most effective gingivitis treatment is to just brush your teeth more effectively. Your dentist may also prescribe you an antibacterial toothpaste or mouthwash.

The longer periodontal disease goes untreated, the harder it becomes to treat. Once gum disease goes from gingivitis to periodontitis it is no longer reversible. The disease will progress through the gum line and begin deteriorating the teeth and jawbone.

Periodontal disease is reversible only while it's gingivitis. Once it progresses to periodontitis, it can no longer be reversed, only managed.

The main cause of gingivitis is the buildup of plaque and tartar as a result of poor brushing and flossing.

In addition to increasing the risk of tooth loss, gum disease can also cause death. It increases your chances of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cancer.

The sweetest people work here, I'm convinced! The ladies at the front desk always go out of their way to be kind and helpful, the hygienists listen to your concerns and will address them to their best ability, and the doctors are just stellar. I drive over 40 min from where I live to go here because it's rare to find a dental office this fantastic.

They Truly Care
Tina E.

The dentist and his staff are wonderful people! In the past, I have had horrible experiences at other dentist offices and then I found this place and I don't think I would ever go anywhere else again. I live about 45 min away from their office but the drive is well worth it. They truly care about their patients. I would recommend this office to anyone.

The Staff Did A Great Job
David L.

Came to Cypress Family Dental a year ago for my sleep apnea device. No more snoring! The staff did a great job fitting me for this oral appliance. Better yet, they were there to support me when I needed some adjustments later on. The front office staff couldn't have been more accommodating to schedule me in. Easy to recommend.
