While braces are an incredibly popular and effective way to straighten your teeth, they can make certain everyday tasks more difficult and require regular maintenance to work at their most efficient. The biggest inconvenience provided by metal braces is how they affect your ability to brush and floss. This is the process Cypress Family Dental recommends for daily brushing and flossing with metal braces.
In order to brush and floss your teeth, you’ll need to take out any elastic, rubber bands, or any removable appliances attached to your braces. Before brushing your teeth, you’ll want to clean your braces. Use your brush to clean out plaque or food debris from any of the brackets, pins, and wires. After cleaning your braces, move on to your teeth. Gently brush each tooth individually for 10 seconds. Make sure to brush both sides in a circular motion along the gumline. You’ll also need to floss once a day.
The wire from metal braces can make it harder to use traditional types of floss, so we recommend the usage of threader floss. Threader floss has a solid, narrow tip that makes it easier to weave the floss between wires and floss every tooth. In addition to this daily routine, you’ll need to schedule regular appointments with your orthodontist for cleaning or adjustments to your braces.
