At Cypress Family Dental, the primary type of veneers we offer are made of porcelain. Porcelain has become very popular because of its strength and coloration, which should match the natural color of your teeth. The porcelain is directly bonded to the damaged part of the tooth. Similar to a filling, an inlay is applied to the tips of the tooth on the cusp. An onlay is similar to an inlay in terms of application, but covers multiple tooth surfaces. If you decide to get inlays and onlays, you will need to schedule two separate appointments. 

In your first visit, the filling that needs to be replaced or the decayed or damaged area of your tooth is removed, and then the tooth is prepared for the inlay or onlay. To ensure proper bite and fit, an impression of the tooth is made and sent to the lab for fabrication. The dentist then applies a temporary sealant and schedules your second appointment. At that appointment, the temporary sealant is removed. Our dentists then make sure that the inlay or onlay fits correctly. The inlay or onlay is adhered to the tooth's surface with a strong resin if the fit is satisfactory and polished to a smooth finish. Traditional fillings can reduce a natural tooth's strength by up to 50 percent. As an alternative, inlays and onlays are bonded directly onto the tooth using special high-strength resins, which can actually increase the strength of a tooth by up to 75 percent.
