What Do You Do After A Root Canal?

You need to know many things about root canal treatment before going in for it. Your dentist will explain all of these things to you. Endodontic therapy is a common form of treatment for a root canal. It involves removing the infected pulp and cleaning out the inside of the tooth with an instrument called an endodontic file or root canal instrument. The cleaned-out space is then filled with a material called gutta-percha, which helps seal off any remaining. A good rule of thumb is that your mouth and gums will be back to normal in about a week or two, except that you won't have pain and swelling from an infection. It would help if you did many things after a root canal to make sure you have the best recovery possible. Don't Eat Right Away You should not eat right after your procedure, and you should not eat until the numbness in your mouth has gone away. Chew on the opposite side until the pain in the tooth has completely subsided before attempting to chew or bite with it again. Elevate Your Head After you have surgery, you will feel sore and have a lot of swelling around your mouth. During the first few nights after surgery, keep your head up while sleeping to help with the swelling. Putting your head on top of another pillow will help ease the pain. Use Over-The-Counter Painkillers As soon as the anesthetic wears off, you'll feel a little pain and discomfort in your gums and jaw. The procedure itself was not painful. Your dentist will tell you to take ibuprofen, an anti-inflammatory painkiller sold by the brand name Advil. Rinse Your Mouth One of the greatest ways to maintain your mouth health and avoid tooth decay is to gargle with warm water and salt. You should use about half a teaspoon to one cup of warm water.

Cold Packs And Icecreams It would help if you ate ice cream after a root canal and used cold compresses to keep the swelling down. Because your tooth may be sensitive, don't eat ice cream with that part of your mouth. Until the swelling subsides, use a cold compress for up to 15 minutes, multiple times each day. Avoid Things That Hurt While healing, don't drink hot drinks, smoke, drink with straws, or drink alcohol. All of those things can make you more likely to get sick. Also, until your teeth have healed and the danger of infection has passed, avoid eating things that may get caught between them. Take A Breather The first two days after having a root canal are not the best time to play sports, work hard, run, or go hiking. Instead, spend that time relaxing and not doing anything too hard while healing. Feelings Should Not Surprise You In the first week or two after having a root canal, you should be able to feel heat, cold, and pain when you bite down. The treated area will make you want to use your tongue to look around and see what's there. There may be a feeling of sensitivity and soreness that comes with that. A Root Canal Takes A While To Heal Root canals usually take less than a week to heal, but sometimes they take longer. If you take medicine for a few days, you may feel a little pain. This can be relieved with the help of medicine. It's best to call your doctor if you're having a lot of pain for more than a week.

What Can You Eat After Root Canal? After you have had your root canal, you will need to take care of your teeth and gums for at least six months before you can eat anything hard or hot.  Can You Drink Out Of A Straw After A Root Canal? If you've had a root canal, you'll be able to use a straw once again, eventually. The important thing to remember is that you should not eat hard foods or use a straw for at least two weeks after your procedure. Can You Go To Work After Root Canal? People often ask when they can go back to their normal activities, like going to work after having a root canal. If you have a root canal, you might not be able to go back to work right away. The day after surgery, most patients can go back to work. Check with your dentist to see when you can do normal things again after having a root canal.

They're All Top Notch
Julie C.

I'm so happy to have found this awesome dentist with an awesome staff. I am completely confident in the doctor's skill level, and completely comfortable relying on him to work on me without allowing me to experience unnecessary pain. In addition to having a good relationship with the dentist, being able to relate with the office staff is equally important to me. From the hygienist to the dental assistants to the front desk, they're all top notch.

They Are So Efficient
Gordon A.

This is the best dentist I have been to and I have been to several. The team is professional and welcoming. They are never over-booked and I have never waited more than 5 minutes in the lobby. They are so efficient, no matter what I go in for, I am out in 45 minutes or less. I highly recommend Cypress Family Dental.

The Staff Did A Great Job
David L.

Came to Cypress Family Dental a year ago for my sleep apnea device. No more snoring! The staff did a great job fitting me for this oral appliance. Better yet, they were there to support me when I needed some adjustments later on. The front office staff couldn't have been more accommodating to schedule me in. Easy to recommend.

They Truly Care
Tina E.

The dentist and his staff are wonderful people! In the past, I have had horrible experiences at other dentist offices and then I found this place and I don't think I would ever go anywhere else again. I live about 45 min away from their office but the drive is well worth it. They truly care about their patients. I would recommend this office to anyone.

The Doctors Are Just Stellar
Natalie R.

The sweetest people work here, I'm convinced! The ladies at the front desk always go out of their way to be kind and helpful, the hygienists listen to your concerns and will address them to their best ability, and the doctors are just stellar. I drive over 40 min from where I live to go here because it's rare to find a dental office this fantastic.
