Are Lumineers Better Than Veneers?
A beautiful smile is a very prominent part of a person’s personality. Teeth play an integral role in making your smile attractive. Sometimes, due to natural or accidental wear and tear, or any pathological condition, due to old age, or in some cases, due to excessive use of harmful products, the natural set of teeth can be flawed. A person might get teeth erosion or damage, teeth are stained, crooked, misaligned, or teeth have gaps between them, or they are simply not happy with their teeth. Lumineers are a product that can be helpful in conditions like these. To get the idea, first, we have to understand what veneers are. Veneers are coverings made of porcelain material that are meant to be placed upon natural teeth. These veneer teeth coverings are applied to teeth that are damaged, stained, chipped, or worn to an extent from which it is not possible to treat simply by procedures like scaling or whitening the teeth. So tooth veneers are made according to a patient’s teeth morphology, and these coverings are then placed upon the teeth to make these damaged teeth more visually appealing. Lumineers are a modified brand of the traditional veneers, which are easy to apply and are ultra-thin but more durable. Traditional veneers are usually 0.5mm, while the Lumineers are thinner, around 0.2mm thick only. Lumineers are more practical as compared to the traditional veneers as they can be easily applied and can be made very precisely similar to the original set of teeth they are meant to cover.
Do Lumineers Look Natural? Lumineers lack that natural teeth look. This is because they are translucent and are different in visibility than the traditional veneers. Lumineers are white, but they are more on the translucent side. That is the reason Lumineers are not good for conditions where teeth are severely damaged, chipped, or discolored. Moreover, they are thinner as compared to the traditional veneers, with a difference of about 0.3mm in them. Veneers, on the other hand, are white porcelain material products that can be disguised as natural teeth. Are Lumineers Better Than Veneers? There is no short answer to that question. Are Lumineers better, as compared to traditional veneers? Porcelain veneers are the traditional way to go. These are a somewhat permanent setup applied on your damaged teeth, and after application, they prove to stay for a long time. Traditional veneers can last up to 10-15 years and are permanently bonded to your teeth. Qualities Of Veneers -Resistant to staining; Veneers are more resistant to staining as compared to Lumineers. As they are not porous like enamel, they are durable, but the edges might stain after around 5 years. -Well-suited for broken or damaged teeth; In situations where teeth are damaged to an extent that it is very visible, veneers are a good choice. Veneers can cover up the teeth, totally hiding the tooth damage. -Permanent; Veneers, when applied, are a permanent application and are not changed or easy to come back from the application. -Last longer; Veneers have a very long life compared to Lumineers. So they don’t need to be replaced as soon. -Cost; Veneers are very expensive. When compared with Lumineers, the cost of veneers is much higher. -Lengthy process; The process of veneer application is very lengthy. First, patients are prepped for the application of veneers. Tooth grinding is done, molds are made for teeth, then the veneers are prepared and sent to the dentist, which takes around 3-4 weeks.
Qualities Of Lumineers -Translucent; Lumineers are more translucent than traditional veneers, so they can’t be used to cover excessive damage to teeth. -No teeth grinding; Lumineers are thinner than veneers. Around 0.2mm in thickness, so the dentist doesn't need to grind your teeth before application. -Shorter preparation and application process; The whole grinding step is removed from the process. Now you simply need to go to your dentist, who will take the mold of your teeth, and a set of Lumineers will be designed especially for you. -Not permanent; Lumineers are not permanent, they can be removed after application with ease, not causing any damage to your teeth. -Cost; The cost of Lumineers is less compared to the veneers. This makes them a more appealing option for some. -Shorter life span; Lumineers, as compared to veneers, are not as long-lasting and have a lesser life span. So, in short, Lumineers cost less, are easily applied, and are reversible but don’t provide the time duration as provided by the veneers. On the other hand, veneers are an expensive and time-consuming process with permanent attachment but can last a lot longer as compared to Lumineers. Customers can choose from the given options and what comes with each type. How Long Do Lumineers Last? Normally, Lumineers last around 10-15 years and have to be replaced after that time, but if good care is taken, the Lumineers can last up to 20 years, depending on a variety of factors. The usual lifespan of Lumineers is reported to be around less than 10 years because, with the lifestyles of different people, the life of Lumineers will decrease. Lumineers are placed on your teeth with firm grips, and they don’t fall off, but it is recommended that you check with your dentist from time to time and get your Lumineers changed around 10 years or when your dentist recommends.
