What Do You Do If You Chip Your Tooth?
Chipping a tooth can be the most painful experience that one can have. Be it at a party while opening a bottle, or be it sports when a ball hits or a player falls to the ground, there are many reasons for the chipping of the tooth. The severity of the chipping or breaking of the tooth depends on many factors. Let’s get into the details of the reasons, symptoms, and management of a chipped tooth. What Causes The Chipping Of The Tooth? Chipping or breaking of the tooth can be seen due to: ● Biting on something very hard ● Trying to open bottle caps with teeth. ● When an object hits teeth ● When a person falls ● Seen mostly in teenagers and children- physically active age group Types Of Chipped Teeth Teeth, when chipped, can involve: ● Only enamel ● Both enamel and dentin ● Involve enamel, dentin, and pulp While the first is relatively less harmful, the latter two are worrisome and require immediate medical and dental attention. Is A Chipped Tooth A Dental Emergency? All the cases that involve chipped-off teeth may not be an emergency, but those involving dentin and pulp are considered an emergency. They can be easily identified by the following: ● When half of the tooth is broken ● When your tooth starts bleeding ● When the tooth cracks into two halves vertically ● Excruciating pain when cold water or air contacts the tooth ● When a tooth or part of the tooth becomes loose in the socket Can A Chipped Tooth Heal Itself? Absolutely not. A tooth, once chipped, cannot heal by itself because the outermost and hardest covering on the tooth, called enamel, cannot regenerate in one’s lifetime. It can only be repaired by a dentist using dental restorative materials, which are an alternative to natural tooth components like enamel and dentin. How Can A Chipped Tooth Be Managed? A chipped tooth can be managed with at-home remedies. First aid is mandatory in such cases. The following precautions can be taken to manage an emergency before seeing a dentist: ● Rinse the mouth with a warm salt water mixture ● If the bleeding is observed, apply pressure on the bleed spot to stop the bleeding ● If the tooth is broken off, preserve the tooth part in milk or saliva ● Over-the-counter painkillers can be used to reduce the pain ● Do not bite or chew on anything hard before seeing a dentist ● Visit an emergency dental clinic nearby at the earliest What Are The Treatment Options To Restore A Chipped-Off Tooth? The treatment options mainly depend upon the severity of breakage. The treatment options range from a simple composite restoration to extraction. Let’s have a look at the treatment options. COMPOSITE RESTORATION It can be done when the enamel and dentin are involved. Restoring the tooth at the earliest prevents the sensitivity and future caries effect on the tooth. It also restores the aesthetics and functionality of the tooth. ROOT CANAL AND CROWN When the tooth is chipped off beyond the dentin or involves the pulp, root canal treatment can be done. A root canal treatment involves the removal of blood vessels and nerves within the tooth and restoring the canal with an inert material. Later the tooth is capped with a dental crown to restore its function and aesthetics. EXTRACTION When the tooth involves a vertical fracture, such as when it is completely broken into two halves, or the fracture involves pulp leading to separation of fragments, it is usually indicated for extraction. REATTACHING THE BROKEN FRAGMENT However, when the fragment is immediately taken to the dentist (within 45 minutes to 1 hour, especially in young children) it can be reattached and splinted for a week or two. But such teeth should be constantly under a dentist’s observation. Can I Leave A Chipped Tooth Alone? A chipped-off tooth can be painful, but timely attention and treatment can save the person from pain and further damage. So, it is better to see a dentist as soon as possible, preferably within 30 minutes of the incident, to reduce the chances of tooth damage.
