Is It A Dental Emergency If You Chip Your Tooth?

What Is A Chipped Tooth? The enamel which covers the outer surface of the teeth is the hardest tissue in your body. However, it is still prone to fracture when the force exceeds its tolerating limits. This fracture of a tooth is called a chipped tooth. A chipped tooth may be due to trauma, such as a severe blow to the face or a bite on hard things. The chipped tooth can cause pain and sensitivity to hot and cold. You should visit a dentist as soon as possible when your tooth is chipped up. Your dentist can choose the best treatment option for your fractured tooth, restoring your smile to its previous brilliance.

Causes Of A Chipped Tooth The reasons for a chipped tooth can range from serious incidents like a punch to the face or a fall to less serious ones like biting down on anything hard like an ice cube, hard chocolate, or other hard food, or even just teeth grinding at sleep. Every time, use a mouthguard if you play a contact sport, such as football or hockey. Additionally, you should refrain from biting down directly on objects like toffee or chocolate. Never hold things between your teeth. Use your teeth for chewing only. You should treat a tooth with special caution if it has already been fractured or chipped since it will be more fragile and likely to fracture again in the future, even after it has been fixed.

Risk Factors For A Chipped Tooth Experiencing heartburn or acid reflux, eating a lot of sugary or acidic foods like tea, grapes, fruit juices, and spicy meals, as well as cavities and other dental damage, can all weaken tooth enamel. Acidic beverages, meals, and stomach acids all erode tooth enamel, leaving the tooth's surface exposed and more prone to cracking or breaking. Since dental enamel degrades with age, people over fifty are more likely to suffer from cracked or fractured teeth.

What Should You Do If Your Tooth Is Chipped? You should schedule a visit with your dentist right away if you have a chipped or broken tooth. In the interim, you should clean your mouth and floss to remove any food debris that could irritate the wound. You can even use dental wax or temporary bonding material to prevent the wound's rough surfaces from disturbing your mouth further. It might take a day or even a few days before you can arrange to get an appointment. To relieve discomfort and swelling, take an over-the-counter painkiller such as ibuprofen. You can also apply ice to the injured region on the outside of your cheek or face.

What Happens If I Chip My Tooth? The chipped part of your tooth exposes the underlying tooth structure to the oral environment and causes symptoms. Following are some common symptoms of a chipped tooth. -Sensitivity: The involved tooth becomes sensitive to hot and cold things. This occurs when the enamel of the tooth fracture results in exposing the dentin. Direct contact of hot and cold things with dentin can cause sensitivity and discomfort. -Spontaneous Pain: Spontaneous pain results from a deep fracture of the tooth. It involves the enamel as well as dentin of the tooth, exposing the pulp tissue. The exposed pulp causes spontaneous pain and can further advance to infection if not treated timely. -Toothache: This occurs during a bite on the involved tooth. The fractured part of the tooth can't tolerate the biting force, and that leads to severe pain.

Is A Chipped Tooth A Dental Emergency? In most cases, a chipped tooth needs a visit to the dentist. Actually, one of the most common dental emergencies is a chipped tooth. Many people may face chipped teeth when they are involved in combat sports. However, some types of fractures are not emergencies. Chipped teeth do not demand an immediate trip to the dentist. The reasons for this are that the conditions do not immediately endanger the patient's overall gingival health. Therefore, making a routine dentist visit ought to be sufficient. However, immediate dental care is required in cases of severe tooth damage. When a significant portion of the tooth is missing, the fracture is serious. Usually, this circumstance results in severe discomfort and, occasionally, blood. In this situation, getting dentist help right now is crucial.

What Happens If You Don't Fix A Chipped Tooth? Without appropriate treatment, the cracked tooth is prone to infection, which will only worsen over time. This infection can spread to the head and neck, leading to a variety of medical issues. Even though it is uncommon, a chipped tooth could be fatal. After chipping a tooth, visit a dentist to aid with the discomfort and make sure the chip won't cause any further issues.

Treatment Options For A Chipped Tooth Depending on the extent of the chipping or break, a damaged tooth can be fixed in several ways, from straightforward bonding and veneers to caps or crowns and fillings. Your dentist might even advise getting a root canal based on the extent of the fracture. -Bonding: Dental bonding is a common repair method for broken teeth or chipped teeth, especially small or less complicated chips. -Veneers: Dental veneers are typically needed for more considerable damage or chipping. Placing porcelain covers over a front tooth to cover chips results in a beautiful, natural appearance that is notably better than your tooth structure. -Crowns: Dental crowns and caps are ceramic covers for your teeth, similar to veneers. But unlike veneers, which just replace the front portion of the tooth, crowns cover the entire tooth. When a break or crack results in a sizable loss of the natural tooth, dental crowns are typically regarded as the finest option for tooth repair.

They're All Top Notch
Julie C.

I'm so happy to have found this awesome dentist with an awesome staff. I am completely confident in the doctor's skill level, and completely comfortable relying on him to work on me without allowing me to experience unnecessary pain. In addition to having a good relationship with the dentist, being able to relate with the office staff is equally important to me. From the hygienist to the dental assistants to the front desk, they're all top notch.

This is the best dentist I have been to and I have been to several. The team is professional and welcoming. They are never over-booked and I have never waited more than 5 minutes in the lobby. They are so efficient, no matter what I go in for, I am out in 45 minutes or less. I highly recommend Cypress Family Dental.

The Staff Did A Great Job
David L.

Came to Cypress Family Dental a year ago for my sleep apnea device. No more snoring! The staff did a great job fitting me for this oral appliance. Better yet, they were there to support me when I needed some adjustments later on. The front office staff couldn't have been more accommodating to schedule me in. Easy to recommend.

They Truly Care
Tina E.

The dentist and his staff are wonderful people! In the past, I have had horrible experiences at other dentist offices and then I found this place and I don't think I would ever go anywhere else again. I live about 45 min away from their office but the drive is well worth it. They truly care about their patients. I would recommend this office to anyone.
